Lakenheath American High School Alumni Network

A virtual reunion for Lakenheath Lancers

I always think about the places we shopped and food we ate(that I usually didn't like)

My fondest shopping memories are the big Sunday Markets, Top Shop, Peterborough Mall, Boots and the news stands for sweets

Does anyone remember those yummy sticky candies called Snap Crackles I think, and Hedgehog crisps?

What about Walls Ice Cream??? So good! I loved the penny candy shops, the markets and Cornish Pasties. (In leiu of fish and chips!) And I collected Smash Hits magazines with a VENGEANCE!

i actually have no fond memories of ice cream there, i thought it was gross. Didn't it come in a thin box and the sliced it and there was no chocolate chip?
But I remember smash hits! my mom barely shopped on base, so I remember thinking I would die without kool-aid, oreos and chocolate chip cookies. I heard they have all of those things now, and tons of american telly!

That's right... we only had four television channels.... And the phone calls that cost by the minute! And the ice cream generally wasn't all that great...except for Walls. They drove around in real ice cream trucks and had things like the Cornetto (kind of like a Drumstick). I remember it being really creamy. Who knows? I'd probably go back and have one and find that it's crap!
I remember that I used to go to the British payphones and plop in nickels instead of 20p coins... same size...and call the states! LOL! I probably called you that way!

I remember Walls.....they were the good ones.....the cornetto was good. lol Got to love Armed Forces Radio and TV services lol On our cable service here in Alaska, they have a military pentagon channel that does all the little news stories in the military......my wife found the channel and was watching it and I came in and said what is that.........like I went back in time lol so I told her about life with Armed Forces radio/tv lol

Im guessing Smash Hits was a girly teen mag.....wasnt one of the ones I was interested in back then....lol

HAHAHA!!

I remember my parents locked the phone with some rotary lock, they were so mean. It was because I was calling you and the girls.
But a cute english boy taught me how to dial the phone without the dials!!!!! I would hit the disconnect button for each number (6 times for 6, 5 times for 5 etc).
And remember they didn't itemize phone calls. Our phone bill was still JACKED, but it was locked, so my parents blamed themselves. lol. My phone number was 61321. I remember how confused i was at first that I needed a different code from every town to call my house.

I miss the Lindt chocolate bars with cognac in them. I've seen the Lindt chocolate bars here, but not with cognac. The other chocolate liqueres (sp?) just aren't the same...

OMG, the best ice cream was the soft serve with the Cadburry Flake stuck in the side!!! FISH & CHIPS!!! Bangers, fried bread, tomatoes for breakfast...
I MISS markest, especially Cambridge...20 min drive from Mildenhall!! The Mexican resturant in Lakenheath village had the best tacos I've ever had. I really miss sausage rolls too. Who can drive an hour away to Epping, hop on the train & be in London in another hour? I want to go back!!!!!

I hear ya......I still crave cadbury flakes.....very hard to find them now unless you order them. One of my fave meals was a ploughmans lunch....and secretly then with a pint of beer, although at 16 you could have a shandy....beer and 7up mix. Ahh the fun times......I have always wanted to get back there.....someday....
