Money would solve some school woes

It is interesting that some of the people who are calling for smaller schools and a smaller school district are the same people who rant and rave about money not being a solution to Nevada’s education problems.

Money is the solution to your problems only if you have it. People with money want the best that money can buy. Money is no object. These people do their shopping at Jaguar, Rolex and Armani, but when it comes to education — let’s head over to the swap meet. Yes, we all know — you shop there because you deserve it. You also deserve the society that results — the one you can’t hide from behind your gated communities.

We all benefit from a strong education system, and we all suffer from the lack of one. The people we drive next to, who work at our restaurants and stores and who sit in the stands at our children’s games are the people who are educated in our schools.

Nevada is rotting near the bottom of our nation in per-pupil funding because of the outspoken anti-public education stance of Gov. Jim Gibbons, the Republicans in the state Senate and the editorial board of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Guess what? Smaller schools cost more money because they require duplication in personnel and facilities. But why are smaller schools better? They are better because the classes are also smaller and teachers are able to form stronger bonds with their students.

The bonds between teachers and students are increasingly important in our modern society, with single-parent homes and parents working swing shifts. In many cases teachers are the primary role models for Nevada’s children. But better teachers cost more money. Why are so many of Nevada’s children taught by long-term substitutes? Because you get what you pay for!

The writer is a teacher trainer for school districts in Clark, Lincoln, Nye and Esmeralda counties.

Yeah, I'm still a bit sensitive to people mixing up Florida and FSU. It kills up.

Are you heading to Denver this summer?

I like your last picture in the "tubes" of Tears, Cooley, and Seth. Have you heard from Seth? Tears works for Kimberly-Clark in Wisconsin. Colgrove works for the State of New York doing something for the environment I believe.
