Profile

What was your graduating class year? If you were a dormie, which one?
1969
What years were you at Lakenheath?
1966 - 1969
Where are you now, and where have you been?
My family now resides in New Mexico
What's new with you? Work, play, relationships, family?
Got a wife (Mary) and son (ten, and very late in life!). Love digital photography and computers (retired computer operations manager). Developing medical supplies network in a second career mode.
What did you do between Lakenheath and now?
Went the Computer Science/Operations route through college; later, finished a career with Newport News Inc. Found a gorgeous dame at age 39 (my age -- she's younger!); we had a son (our "Miracle Boy"), who I will be supporting until I die (what the hell else am I good for -- LOL!).
Name some old Lakenheath classmates you have contact with and will tell about this site.
Hey, great website! Just discovered it (April 7, 2008). I saw Ron Spatafora's mugshot and Dave Moore's silhouette! These two items caught me by surprise, because Ron and I were in a number of classes together...Architectural Drafting...with teacher Mr. Samuelowitz. Dave and I new each other when my mother managed the Brandon Park Guest House (transit quarters for incoming and outgoing military personnel and their families), and Dave's family and mine became good friends. Hi, Dave! Hi, Ron!

Other pals were Jimmy Fouts (Mr. Wilson's band class and Jazz band stuff!): Hey, Jimmy, hope you still play the alto (my tenor gathers dust from year to year, with the infrequent one-day blow-out by myself -- spittle is a natural cleanser for tarnishing brass instruments. I swear, one day I will retire that saxaphone and nail it on the wall over my bar...like at Applebee's Restaurant!). I mostly recall those teachers who made my memories happen, like Mr. Wilson (band class), Ms. Ball (French Class)--she later married Mr. Wilson...I wonder what accent their kids had later? French-Alabamian! What a sound! I really miss him. Anyone know Mr. Wilson's disposition? I'm guessing he stayed "over there" after getting married.

I had during most of my high school years, a keen interest in art. Mr. Davis was a great friend and my art teacher. He encouraged me to do my best; unfortunately, I discovered in my twenties that earning a great living doing art stuff was not easy. Actually, now in my "later" years...I am kind of warming up to "doing art stuff" again. I actually found my old watercolours paints and brushes, some quite expensive and even rare. I might paint the Sandia Mountain ... kind of like Georgia O'Keefe style...who knows...perhaps I'll become a "Grandma Moses" too! LOL!!!

Another teacher who really made my math years at LHS: Ms. Fight. Anyone take her algebra courses? What a lady! Tough as nails! She had also, I believe, been an English major along with the math interests.

Ms. Raulston was my U.S. History teacher...she had seen more history when she was teaching my class...than I still have NOT experienced at my current age (57). What a lady too! I believe she had been a small girl while in the courtroom with her uncle(?) during the famous "Monkey Trials" (sic). Still...that was the year (1968) that the North Koreans had grabbed our "spy boat" off their coast. Hal Holbrook later starred as the skipper onboard that ill-fated U.S. Navy ship in a docu-drama. Very inspirational point in our country's history -- not to mention the ongoing Vietnam era.

And who will ever forget Mr. Paul McCulloh, U.S. Govt. and Econ teacher? I'll never forget his game to the class, challenging all of us to think of as many things that we could do with a simple paperclip. And my response to his query about "...what good were hamburgers, anyway?..." (I had said, "They are the 'Breakfast of Champions!'" He kind of looked befuddled at my -- then anonymous written reply -- and which he had chosen to read aloud). Regarding his remark to my research paper quality covering Alexander Toqueville (sic), "...Mike...it's a nice little wander through no-where!"... I have to admit: he was right...but at that time...well...I didn't feel the need to challenge his overall views of my minimalist's effort. Besides...I had to read all about Toqueville (sic) --AGAIN!-- in college.

Glad to help on Sandra info. Yeah, those old fire trails, especially at night, were spookie enough. You may also remember the nearby mausoleum in the woods? It had like this eight or ten foot tall iron fence and gate surrounding it. We dependents sometimes ventured inside it to read the tombstones. Yech! I can still feel the goosebumps on this one occaision when I got my pant cuff spiked and stuck on one of the spearpoint ornaments. I was just kind of casually dangling until some other brats detached me. Of course, we were all awaiting the resurrection of the zombies from the adjacent graves..."The willies or advancing up my back and spine!" Jimmy said your family actually lived off base the time you were there. Interesting. Living on base was cool, but getting more mainstreamed within the host country culture must have been interesting. I recall at least two anti-Vietnam marches through the base housing area coming up from Lakenheath town. Bobbies escorted about a hundred or so demonstrators through the area. I wonder if the base is so open now. Two demonstrators hopped past the lined assembly of security personnel -- mostly Bobbies -- and tried dashing across the open grounds from the road to the back of our housing unit. They tossed some peace movement literature but the Bobbies picked it up after they had spun their two truncheons around the running demonstrators' legs, tripping them. The Bobbies peacefully got the two demonstrators back to the marching lines, and everything remained cool. I recall we had been forewarned about the march, and that we should stay inside. But, naturally, we inquisitive Ameican dependents were mostly seen hanging out the windows...what the heck... there was nothing else to do. Teen center closed...bowling alley closed, theater closed ... thanks, demonstrators! Oh, well, those were the days!

Thanks for the reply. I'll just update the class database on Sandy with c/o you and list you as being contactable through this site. No, I have not seen the dvd you sent Jimmie, but heard something about an old movie that he had (from our mom). I'll get a hold of him and get it. Thanks. The thing I most remember about the BP guesthouse was going out ghost hunting one night as a group and having the sh** scared out of me! Would have sworn I actually saw something by that old church off the trail.

Ok, Mike, been emailing you for years on various sites; maybe I caught up with you now? I maintain the class of '71 database and was wondering if you had contact information on your sister Sandy, or could ask her to contact me. foutsdan@hotmail.com Thanks.

Hi Mike,
WOW, what a great commentary that was!! I throughly enjoyed reading every word and agree compassionately with you. There is such a connection that "we" all have, civilans do not understand nor could possibly understand the depth and loyalty military people possess. When I left Lakenheath I tried to keep in touch with my friends but it became impossible through the years, this site is such a blessing because of the connection we now have to re-discover those long lost friends. I have enjoyed talking with my classmates and the new friends I have made through this wonderful venue. I hope you will be at the reunion, I only live 20 minutes from Greenville, my sister and I are definitely coming, I hope to see you there. And yes, the Trevino's have had some terrible times, but I think we all have, and yes, Dave was definitely proud of his physique!!!! Too proud I believe!!! But life does change doesn't it. Now he is "skinny as a rail" as you put it!!! Anyway , thanks for all the wonderful comments and memories. Hope to see you soon!!

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the nice note and yes, you were right, I was married to D. Trevino for a very short time. I have a daughter, Tanya, by him. Her pictures are on my site. Anyway, we were engaged for most of my junior year, before he got drafted he joined the Air Force and we married right before he left of Lackland AFB, for BasicTraining. I was only 16 and he was 19, much too young to even think about marrying. But anyway, we eventually divorced and I really didn't much to do with him for reasons I won't mention. Through years the only thing I do know about him is that he lives in Washington DC and works at the Pentagon and he is a marathon runner, gone are the weight lifting days, if you were to see him now you would be shocked at how thin he is, I have only seen pictures. Basically that is all I know of him. My fathere was stationed at Mildenhall, so before Base housing we stayed at The Bird in Hand. right outside the base. I do know that Dave' father passed away from a hear attack and his mother struggled with breast cancer. His youngest brother, Donnie is in a wheel chair, also for reasons I won't mention, Jimmy I think was the only one who made anything of his life and John, well, who knows about John. I will say this, I did love his father, he was the kindest nicest man to me and I will never forget that about him. I hope that answers some of your questions. Wish I could be of more help. If I find out anything more I will let you know, but I will be honest, I would be the last person he would contact. Talk soon!!

You were right Mike, it is Mr McCulloh. He swore that there were no pictures of him, but I had to have one. He was my favorite teacher. He was the hardest on me, and made me a much more emotionally disturbed adult for it. :-)
